On June 16, 2022, the world’s first desert-circling railway—the Hetian-Ruoqiang Railway—officially began operation, completing the 2,712-kilometer loop around the Taklamakan Desert. As a key national railway construction project, the 825-kilometer-long Hetian-Ruoqiang Railway has not only ended the long-standing lack of train service in many parts of southern Xinjiang but also laid out a new blueprint for high-quality regional economic and social development. It has played an important role in improving local residents’ travel convenience, enhancing logistics efficiency, and promoting desert control and environmental protection.
